The Human-Animal Bond: Navigating Love, Loss, and Life's Hardest Decisions
For many of us, pets are much more than animals, they are family. They greet us at the door after a long day, provide comfort during difficult times, and become woven into the fabric of our daily lives. This connection, often referred to as the human-animal bond, is one of the most meaningful relationships many people will experience.
Because this bond is so strong, facing a pet's illness, receiving a difficult diagnosis, or making end-of-life decisions can be incredibly emotional and overwhelming. Feelings of grief, uncertainty, guilt, sadness, and even isolation are common. Yet these emotions are often overlooked or misunderstood because pet loss is not always recognized in the same way as other forms of grief.
At Novel, we understand that caring for pets also means caring for the people who love them.
That's why we are proud to introduce Veterinary Social Work services with Teagan Miller, MSW.
Veterinary social work is a specialized field that supports pet owners and veterinary teams through the emotional aspects of veterinary care. Whether families are navigating a new diagnosis, considering treatment options, facing end-of-life decisions, or coping with the loss of a beloved companion, veterinary social workers provide guidance, emotional support, and resources during some of life's most challenging moments.
Teagan is a registered social worker who completed her Master's level placement at the Ontario Veterinary College as part of the in-hospital social work team. In this role, she provided consultation support to both staff and clients, helping families navigate difficult diagnoses, treatment planning, and end-of-life decision-making. She also provided grief and bereavement counselling for clients following the loss of their companion animals.
As a lifelong animal lover and pet parent herself, Teagan brings both professional expertise and personal understanding to her work. She recognizes the profound role animals play in our lives and the deep emotional impact that illness, aging, and loss can have on families.
At Novel, our goal is to support the entire family—both human and animal. By offering veterinary social work services, we hope to provide a safe space for clients to process emotions, ask difficult questions, and receive compassionate support throughout their pet's healthcare journey.
The human-animal bond is powerful. It deserves to be acknowledged, supported, and cared for. Through veterinary social work, we are taking another step toward ensuring that no family has to navigate these experiences alone.
